Working with Shame in EFT Therapy
October 12 & 13, 2018
Two One-Day Workshops
This training distinguishes itself from the currently popular educational shame work. It is attachment based, and grounded in researched processes of experiential change – articulated in the EFT model. All therapists/counselors are appropriate for this training, no previous EFT training is required.
Day One: October 12th
Using a mixture of didactic presentations, case discussion, viewing and discussion of clinical training tapes and experiential exercises you will review what you need to know to treat couples/clients who present with significant amounts of shame, and will also work with self-of-therapist issues that come up when working with shame, to increase your own shame resilience.
Shame, the unspeakable emotion, increases with couple/client distress and is often present but illusive in treatment. It tends to block therapists from organizing the elements of emotion that matter most in successful completion of the three change processes of Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Recognizing, attuning to, and exploring this inherently disorganizing and hidden emotion is essential for treating couples/clients, especially those in high distress, with insecure childhood attachment, and those dealing with trauma.
This workshop is designed to help therapists identify and work with shame and the emotions it binds to.
You will learn to help couples/clients across the spectrum of distress, including the more difficult, complex and chaotic patterns, develop emotional balance and security. You will have opportunity to review and practice the EFT interventions most useful when partners/individuals are dealing with debilitating shame. You will learn to utilize the interventions that help heal shame that blocks clients from receiving love and experience positive bonding.
Objectives
- Understand the emotion of shame and its relevance in couple therapy.
- Be able to identify the pivotal moments to process shame, heal residual shame distress, and shape recovery.
- Define and practice specific interventions as they are refined to fit the needs of high shame couples.
- Use therapist/practitioner experience to identify, empathize with and attune to both secondary and primary shame.
Day Two: October 13th – Case Presentations
Participants will be able to ask for time to present cases they find themselves blocked with either by the shame of their client/couples or by their own shame response. We will draw from a hat of volunteer participants and include as many of you as time permits. We will also have a live couple with shame wounding working with Dr. Jorgensen in front of the group. There is nothing like a live demonstration to see Dr. Jorgensen demonstrate the skills you will be learning and practicing yourselves in these two days of learning.

“At last, we have a map for working with shame in couple relationships! I highly recommend Dr. Rebecca Jorgensen’s (Becca) gentle, supportive, and evidence-based approach to working with shame using EFT. It has been such an important piece for me to develop in my work with couples and with supervisees. The workshop provided the opportunity for me to understand shame and how shame can be functional and an essential primary emotion while also absorbing and often present in negative cycles with couples. The workshop provided me with important skills to identify and contain secondary shame and how to explore and transform primary shame. Becca also helped me explore my own experience of shame as a therapist and supervisor. So, if you’re working with couples, supervising couples’ therapists, or want to explore your own experience of shame, Becca’s workshop is just the thing!”
